During the press conference held as a response to the released report from Special Counsel Robert Hur’s criminal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified material, Biden blasted Hur for suggesting he is suffering a cognitive decline.
In addition to slamming Hur for stating that Biden had forgotten major life events such as the death of his son or his time as vice president in the Obama administration, Biden also lashed out at reporters who brought up voters’ concerns about his age and mental state.
During the event, Biden mixed up Egypt and Mexico presidents and forgot crucial details from the special counsel’s report. He also reportedly forgot the name of the church where his late son Beau got the rosary he wears everyday while trying to prove that the memory of his deceased son remains etched in his brain.
While some Democrats have tried to defend him amid the backlash the press conference subjected him to, some Democrats could not help but admit to the serious damage the conference did to his reelection bid.
For longtime Democratic strategist and former Clinton White House aide Paul Begala, the president’s performance was bad news.
“Look, I’m a Biden supporter. And I slept like a baby last night. I woke up every two hours crying and wet the bed,” he stated.
A Democrat operative, during an interview with NBC News, said that yesterday’s events were “beyond devastating.”
It confirms every doubt and concern that voters have. If the only reason they didn’t charge him is because he’s too old to be charged, then how can he be president of the United States?” the operative added.
Another ally of the president told NBC News that the events of that Thursday made the “worst day of his presidency.”
According to another unnamed Democrat strategist, who spoke with The Dispatch, Hur’s report and Biden’s press conference come together to make a disaster even “worse than an indictment.”
