Maryland Senate race, Democrat Angela Alsobrooks leads Republican Larry Hogan in district where more than a third of voters claim they have never heard her name
In a new statewide poll from Gonzales Research & Media Services, Alsobrooks — the Prince George’s County Executive as of 2018 on university leave until her term ends November.
But even with her lead, Alsobrooks faces a big challenge in raising her name ID among voters. The poll shows that 34% of registered voters do not know the name, including a third (33%) among independents and nearly a fifth (17%) for Democratic voters.
Significantly the poll showed that 72% of all likely voters responded they did not know the Democratic candidate.
A Democrat, Ben Cardin will not run for re-election in the U.S. Senate next year after serving nearly two decades with more than six as a professional representative; informally announced on Friday that he was resigning his seat effective following the November election when it is widely expected to be filled by President Joe Biden.
Although Democrats are working to keep their narrow grip on the Senate, Hogan’s sudden decision in February to get into the race set up a surprising contest in Maryland, long considered Democratic territory.
The former two-term governor — who was leaving office in early 2023 with sky-high approval ratings while publicly berating ex-President Trump. Dick Armey says he won’t back Trump in the fall and warns against dismissing guilty verdicts from his criminal trial.
The Gonzales Research & Media Services poll surveyed 820 likely voters by phone from August 24-30.
