The former aide for Governor Kathy Hochul was arrested, along with her husband, as a foreign agent for China in exchange for millions of dollars in kickbacks and fancy perks.
According to the 64-page indictment, Sun and Hu bought a $4 million mansion in Manhasset using proceeds of their illicit scheme. They also allegedly purchased with illegal funds two Mercedes-Benz cars worth more than $200,000 each, along with other expensive items.
Sun improperly leveraged her role while serving under Governor Hochul and then-Governor Andrew Cuomo to make the New York State Government into a “de facto propaganda arm” of the People’s Republics of China (PRC) and its Communist Party, according to court filings.
The indictment also accuses Sun of boasting about stopping both Cuomo and Hochul from issuing statements that might be construed as acknowledging Taiwan, including in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic when 200,000 masks had been sent to New York by officials there.
In addition, she is said to have banned government representatives from Taiwan from visiting the governor’s office.
“New York Deputy Chief of Staff and her spouse been waged by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) under New Prosecutor Breon,” Peace said.
According to the charges, Sun and Hu laundered kickbacks from China and hundreds of thousands more dollars in funds granted by their affiliated Chinese Communist Party (CCP) locales which they used to pay for luxury items including a $4.1 million home on Long Island that was subject to an FBI raid last year.
The couple he is marrying are set to appear in Brooklyn federal court Tuesday afternoon, where they face a slew of charges ranging from conspiracy and the unregistered agents act violations as well as visa fraud, alien smuggling and money laundering.
Spokesperson for Hochul’s office, commenting on Sun’s employment: “We terminated her in March 2023 after learning of the evidence of misconduct and reported it directly to law enforcement and have cooperated fully with the investigation.”
