Spanish business leader and family die in NYC helicopter tragedy

In a tragic incident Thursday afternoon, five members of a prominent Spanish family, including the head of Siemens Spain, lost their lives when their tourist helicopter crashed into the Hudson River. Authorities identified Agustin Escobar, who served as president and CEO of Siemens’ Spanish operations, as one of the victims. Escobar perished alongside his wife and their three school-age children when their sightseeing helicopter met with disaster. The family, who had arrived in New York City from Barcelona earlier that day, had documented their ill-fated excursion with photos.

Images posted on New York Helicopter Tours website captured the family’s final moments, showing them cheerfully posing in front of the Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter and seated inside the aircraft with their safety restraints secured. The devastating incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. when the helicopter suddenly broke apart mid-flight before plummeting into the river’s murky depths. Emergency responders pronounced four victims dead at the crash site, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.

As of Thursday evening, officials had not released the identity of the pilot. The circumstances leading to the catastrophic failure of the aircraft remain unknown, with investigators working to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation into this tragic incident continues to develop, with authorities expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
