A Connecticut inmate made headlines after filming and sharing footage of his dramatic prison break, despite having only four months remaining on his sentence.

William Banks, who was serving an eight-month term for removing pro-Israel yard signs from his neighborhood, documented his escape and assisted other inmates in breaking free from the correctional facility.

Prior to his incarceration, Banks had also recorded and published a video explaining his actions. He justified removing the yard signs by citing his opposition to Israel’s military response in Gaza following the October 7 attacks, arguing that the campaign was resulting in significant Palestinian casualties.

The decision to attempt a prison break with just months remaining on his sentence, and particularly the choice to document and share the escape, has drawn significant attention to Banks’ case. His actions represent an unusual instance of an inmate not only orchestrating a prison break but also creating a visual record of the event.

The escape comes as a striking development in what began as a case of political activism through the removal of yard signs, escalating into a more serious criminal matter with the unauthorized departure from a correctional facility.
