The mainstream media’s influence has taken a significant hit following Trump’s decisive reelection victory, as evidenced by the reactions of CNN’s Van Jones and 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl.
Van Jones, a prominent figure at CNN, acknowledged the shifting media landscape, noting that alternative platforms are now drawing larger audiences than traditional news outlets. “There are people out there getting 14 million streams,” Jones admitted, “and we’re on cable news getting one or two million. The political class is way off.”

Similarly, Stahl expressed her concerns about the traditional media’s declining influence, stating “I’m extremely worried about the press. I despair. I worry greatly. We’re at the point where if [sic] the POTUS is going to say ‘Legacy media is dead.’ I’m very dark about it.”
The 2024 campaign revealed the diminishing impact of conventional media outlets. Despite their efforts, including CNN’s coverage of Trump’s Madison Square Garden appearance and 60 Minutes’ editing of Harris’s interview, their influence proved ineffective in swaying election outcomes.
Trump’s strategic use of alternative media platforms, including podcast appearances and Breitbart News interviews, mirrors Kennedy’s groundbreaking embrace of television in 1960. However, while Kennedy’s shift was technology-driven, the current transformation stems from mainstream media’s credibility crisis.

Throughout the election cycle, alternative media platforms successfully challenged and debunked numerous mainstream media narratives about Trump. This shift in information dissemination has fundamentally altered the media landscape, reducing the legacy media’s ability to shape public opinion effectively.
While traditional media outlets continue to operate, their influence has significantly diminished, confined largely to their existing audience base. This transformation represents a major shift in how Americans consume and process political information.
