Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former Democratic congressman and registered sex offender, has initiated steps to pursue a seat on the New York City Council by establishing a campaign committee called Weiner 25 and filing paperwork for the 2nd District position.

Despite these preparations and his scheduled appearance at a Downtown Independent Democrats forum, the 60-year-old maintains he’s merely exploring possibilities, telling both the AP and New York Post that his committee formation was necessary to participate in candidate discussions.

His political journey began on the council from 1992 to 1998 before advancing to Congress, replacing Chuck Schumer. Initially viewed as a promising Democratic figure, Weiner’s career derailed in 2011 following multiple sexting scandals, including messages to underage recipients.

During this period, he was married to Hillary Clinton’s aide Huma Abedin, who gave birth to their son Jordan. His 2013 mayoral campaign collapsed amid fresh controversies involving his online alias “Carlos Danger.”

The situation worsened in 2016 when FBI investigations revealed explicit communications with a 15-year-old North Carolina girl. This scandal damaged Clinton’s presidential campaign, ended his marriage, and resulted in an 18-month prison sentence. Upon release in 2019, he was required to register as a level 1 sex offender.

“We’re at a moment that we Democrats, we seem like we come into knife fights carrying library books all the time,” Weiner recently stated on his radio show, where he discussed returning to politics. While acknowledging his past – “The things in my past, the things about my addiction, the things about my acting out, the things about my background — it’s a lot, it’s a lot” – he expressed desire for public service.

The race already features established candidates including Harvey Epstein, Andrea Gordillo, and Sarah Batchu. While Epstein welcomed additional candidates, Gordillo criticized Weiner as a “failed New York and Washington politician.” Batchu was more direct: “Trump wins, and now every creepy, washed-up politician thinks they can make a comeback. My constituents deserve better than to serve as the audience for a disgraced politician’s redemption tour.”
