Following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday, there’s a palpable sense of relief in many parts of the world, according to Robert Wilkie, who served as Secretary of Veterans Affairs during Trump’s first term.
Speaking to Newsmax’s “Wake Up America,” Wilkie shared his observations from recent travels, particularly in Eastern Europe. He noted that countries bordering Russia, as well as Israel and leading Sunni Arab states in the Middle East, are expressing relief at Trump’s win.

Wilkie attributed this sentiment to the peace that prevailed in these regions during Trump’s previous tenure. He emphasized Trump’s understanding of America’s deterrent power, which he used effectively to foster peace between Israelis and Arabs, and to prevent Russian expansion into Ukraine, Moldova, and other Eastern European nations.
While acknowledging that this view might not be popular in certain circles, such as “the salons of Paris” or “the halls of Harvard,” Wilkie sees it as a positive sign for Trump’s approach.
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Wilkie speculated that Trump’s first move might be a call to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He suggested Trump’s message would be clear: “stop, or I give the Ukrainians everything that they need.” Wilkie recalled a previous incident in Syria where Trump’s decisive action resulted in the elimination of 300 Russian troops, sending a strong message to Moscow.
Wilkie also discussed the rotation of U.S. forces throughout Eastern Europe during Trump’s presidency, which he believes served as a reminder to Russia of America’s sphere of influence in the region.
It took about 12 hours after my father‘s election win for Hamas to call for peace! @realDonaldTrump isn’t even president yet and he’s already getting it done. Spectacular. pic.twitter.com/mRaPN2dJs3

Commenting on recent developments in Israel, Wilkie interpreted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as a sign of Netanyahu’s determination to achieve a decisive victory over militant groups. He acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions for a national leader, especially in a close-knit country like Israel.
Lastly, Wilkie criticized the Biden administration’s handling of plea agreements with alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and co-defendants. He expressed shock at the administration’s decision to override objections from the Secretary of Defense and predicted that Trump would intervene to ensure justice for the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
