WEST NILE in UK – Officials Say “DON’T WORRY”

First West Nile Virus detected in UK mosquitoes and government health officials are telling us not to worry – yet another disease crossing borders while they do nothing but “monitor” the situation.

Another Foreign Invader Crosses UK Borders

The UK Health Security Agency just announced they’ve found West Nile virus in British mosquitoes for the first time. Genetic fragments of the virus were discovered in Aedes vexans mosquitoes collected last July from wetlands near Gamston, Nottinghamshire. Of course, they’re only telling us about it now – a full year later – because that’s how government transparency works these days. Meanwhile, this virus, which can cause severe neurological disease and has no approved treatment, is quietly establishing itself on British soil while officials assure everyone there’s nothing to worry about.

Watch coverage here.

The detection came from the Vector-Borne RADAR programme – a joint surveillance effort by the UK Health Security Agency and the Animal and Plant Health Agency. They’ve tested over 30,000 mosquitoes and 300 birds from “high-risk areas” in England during 2023 and 2024. Surprisingly, all other samples tested negative. Or perhaps not so surprising when government agencies are involved in the testing. After all, finding nothing means there’s no problem to solve, right? Just like how border officials somehow miss thousands of illegal migrants crossing the English Channel.

Officials Say “Don’t Worry” About Disease With No Cure

Dr. Meera Chand from the health security agency claims that finding West Nile virus in UK mosquitoes is “not unexpected” and insists “the risk to the general public is currently assessed as very low.” Not unexpected? Then why weren’t preparations made years ago? And if border and health security officials knew this was coming, why is this the first time the public is hearing about it? The typical government response: acknowledge a problem only after it’s discovered, then immediately downplay its significance.

“Although virus-infected mosquitos have been found in the UK there’s no evidence yet that these mosquitoes will survive in the UK climate, although prolonged warm weather does increase the chances.” – Professor Paul Long.

West Nile virus primarily circulates among birds, with humans and horses becoming infected when bitten by infected mosquitoes. While most human infections are asymptomatic or cause mild illness, the virus can lead to severe neurological disease in some cases, particularly in older individuals. There’s no specific treatment for the infection – just another detail the health officials conveniently minimize when telling you not to worry. And we’re supposed to just trust that the same bureaucracy that botched the COVID response has this one under control?

The Climate Change Excuse

Predictably, climate change is being blamed for the arrival of this new threat. It’s the perfect scapegoat for government failures – an invisible, gradual force that can be blamed for everything from disease to migration to economic problems. Never mind that proper border control and surveillance could have detected and addressed this issue years ago. Instead, we’re told to accept this as an inevitable consequence of our changing world, rather than a failure of public health policy.

“Climate change isn’t just a future threat; it’s already reshaping disease patterns. As the climate continues to warm and rainfall patterns shift, the risk of diseases such as West Nile Virus spreading to Europe has significantly increased. This is not a new phenomenon, Europe has become increasingly more hospitable for West Nile Virus since the 1980s, with a period of rapid warming creating the perfect conditions for the virus to spread. Countries like the UK that were once considered low risk are now more vulnerable to outbreaks – a concern only amplified by the fact that there are currently no approved treatments for West Nile Virus.” – Felipe Colón.

Scientists believe the virus likely entered the UK via migratory birds – yet another foreign invader crossing borders without proper checks. West Nile virus is endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and southern Europe, with its range steadily expanding. Instead of taking proactive measures to prevent its establishment in Britain, authorities are content to “monitor” the situation. We’ve seen this approach before with invasive species, illegal immigration, and other threats – monitor, observe, study, but never actually prevent or solve the problem.

The Surveillance State That Can’t Actually Protect You

The UK government loves surveillance when it comes to watching its own citizens, but seems remarkably ineffective at monitoring actual threats to public health and safety. Healthcare professionals are now being advised to consider West Nile virus testing for patients with unexplained encephalitis – essentially admitting they expect human cases to emerge. Meanwhile, the public is told the risk remains “very low” – the same reassurance we’ve heard before countless crises that later spiraled out of control.

“The detection of West Nile virus in UK mosquitoes is a significant finding, especially as our climate changes. The virus is transmitted among birds by mosquitoes, and humans become infected when they are coincidentally bitten by an infected mosquito. It is most likely the virus arrived in the UK via an infected migrating bird. Climate change impacts on numbers and types of mosquitoes and allows emerging viruses to become established, and we are likely to see more of this, and similar viruses in the future.” – Prof Tom Solomon.

This story perfectly encapsulates the modern government approach to protecting its citizens: detect a problem too late, downplay its significance, blame large systemic issues beyond their control, and then “monitor” the situation while doing nothing substantive to address it. Once again, Britons are left to fend for themselves against yet another threat crossing their borders. At least mosquitoes don’t get hotel rooms paid for by taxpayers – for now.
