Sources have said that top Democrats threatened Joe Biden with removal from office unless he resigned.
As party elites ramped up the pressure on Biden over the last few weeks, one insider described that rage and paranoia set in. The strategy to pressure Biden out even extended as far infamously allowing him an almost three-hour live broadcast debate with GOP candidate Donald Trump last month.
In the 90-minute debate Biden was muddled and at one point became so clueless that there were fears over his physical fitness.
“That debate was a set-up to convince Democrats that he couldn’t run for president,” the source said Monday.
Even as fellow Democrats called for Biden to stand down, he refused to yield. However, party leaders threatened the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution. As such this amendment makes it possible for the vice president and members of his cabinet to determine the mental state of mind of a sitting president as “unable” then therefore force or compel him out.
Shortly after officially resigning from the presidential race, Biden backed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
With the impending Democratic Convention next month and just four months from Election Day, some Democrats still have not made up their mind on Harris.
“We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead,” Obama said Sunday.
After the disastrous debate, Biden’s son Hunter stepped up his involvement in his father’s daily life and attended every meeting, both official and unofficial.
However, Biden’s staff reportedly didn’t know that he planned to pull out of the race until Tuesday, and many were blindsided by his X post. The letter was typed on Biden’s personal letterhead instead of White House stationery and signed in an electronic manner.
“Everyone was totally shocked,” the source said. “It was pretty telling that Jill Biden tweeted a heart emoji and nothing else.”
