Alex DeGrasse, a senior advisor to UN ambassador nominee and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, has announced he will not pursue the soon-to-be-vacant 21st District Congressional seat.

“I’m not considering running for Congress in New York-21,” he said in a statement to Newsmax on Tuesday morning. “I’m proud of my ten years of service to New York-21 and am committed to continuing to work with all our prospective candidates.”

The announcement comes amid widespread speculation about potential successors to Stefanik’s congressional seat in the Republican-leaning upstate district.

DeGrasse, who holds considerable influence among both district Republicans and the New York Conservative Party, had emerged as a potential candidate in recent discussions.

Following Stefanik’s formal resignation, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul will schedule a special election, which must occur within 70-80 days.

The race has already attracted significant attention, with approximately twelve Republicans expressing interest. Among them is outgoing Representative Marc Molinaro, who recently lost his re-election bid in the adjacent 19th District and resides just eight miles beyond the 21st District’s boundaries.

The selection process for the Republican nominee will be managed by the district’s fifteen Republican county chairs once Stefanik officially steps down and Hochul announces the election date.
