Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson, Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, highlighted the unprecedented nature of the theft. “In my career, I’ve never heard of a hundred thousand eggs being stolen. This is definitely unique,” she remarked. She emphasized their reliance on community assistance, adding, “We’re relying on leads from people from the community. So we’re hoping that somebody knows something, and they’ll call us and give us some tips.”
Pete & Gerry’s Organics, a family-operated enterprise, partners with small family farms nationwide to produce organic, free-range eggs. The company maintains strict standards in their farming practices, eschewing antibiotics, hormones, and synthetic pesticides while ensuring their hens have access to outdoor areas for optimal health.
This theft coincides with a period of significant egg price increases and nationwide shortages. Historical data shows a dramatic price evolution: from $1.32 per dozen when Trump entered office in January 2017, maintaining stability throughout his presidency, to $1.47 when Biden assumed office in January 2021. According to the Federal Reserve of St. Louis, prices have since skyrocketed to $4.15 per dozen by December 2024, marking a nearly 200% increase.
While the Biden administration attributes these increases to avian flu outbreaks and supply chain difficulties, critics argue these explanations inadequately address the broader inflation issues and economic policies affecting Americans’ purchasing power.
