Removing DEI Programs for a Sharper Military Focus

The Pentagon has recently issued a groundbreaking directive to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and anti-racism materials from military libraries. The directive applies to service academies and training centers with a strict two-week deadline for compliance, indicating the seriousness of this strategic shift. This action is part of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s move to prioritize core military values and effectiveness over what he views as grievances-wrought distractions.

Implementing a Merit-Based Admission Policy

The Pentagon has also ordered that service academies such as West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy admit candidates based solely on merit. This effectively disregards considerations of race, ethnicity, or sex and emphasizes that selecting the most qualified candidates is essential for maintaining military readiness. Hegseth’s approach not only streamlines operations but reinforces military cohesion, providing a strong stance against divisive educational materials.

Hegseth also put out a memo ordering the service academies to admit students “based exclusively on merit,” with “no consideration of race, ethnicity, or sex,” underlining the word “no” on the document.

Nearly 400 DEI-related books have already been removed from the U.S. Naval Academy library, with similar efforts underway at the Army and Air Force academies. This systematic removal highlights the Pentagon’s commitment to building a colorblind, merit-based culture within the military. However, the directive has sparked criticism. Critics argue that such moves undermine multicultural education and deny perspectives that historically contribute to rich military history.

The Bigger Picture of DEI Rollbacks
