Massie wants to let Americans carry guns without permits

Republican Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky urged his colleagues in Congress to support his National Constitutional Carry Act, a measure aimed at eliminating government restrictions on citizens’ constitutional right to carry firearms for self-defense.

Currently, 29 states have adopted constitutional carry laws, enabling their residents to carry concealed weapons without obtaining government permits or licenses. These states include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Massie’s proposed legislation would extend constitutional carry across the entire nation, eliminating the burdensome requirements that law-abiding citizens in the remaining 31 states must navigate to exercise their self-defense rights.

The National Constitutional Carry Act specifically states its purpose is to “enforce the rights protected by the Second and Fourteenth Amendments against the States.”

Furthermore, the act stipulates, “No State or political subdivision of a State may impose a criminal or civil penalty on, or otherwise indirectly dissuade the carrying of firearms (including by imposing a financial or other barrier to entry) in public by residents or nonresidents of that State who are citizens of the United States and otherwise eligible to possess firearms under State and Federal law.”
