In a significant development ahead of Inauguration Day, seven police departments in the D.C. metropolitan area have declined to provide security assistance to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), according to a Daily Caller report.

A representative from Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland indicated their decision stemmed from the current memorandum of understanding between departments, though specific details weren’t elaborated upon.

The upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump has already seen unprecedented changes, with the ceremony being relocated indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to extreme cold weather conditions. This marks a historic shift, as it’s the first indoor presidential swearing-in ceremony since the 1980s. Officials are currently working to arrange alternative viewing accommodations at the local sports arena.

The list of departments opting out of MPD assistance includes several Maryland-based agencies: Howard County Police Department, Queen Anne’s County Police Department, Anne Arundel County, Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County, and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department.

However, some of these departments, including Anne Arundel County, Maryland State Police, and Prince George’s County, have confirmed they will still provide support to the Capitol Police during the inauguration.

The MPD addressed the situation through an official statement: “As with any other events in the District, it is our priority to ensure the safety and security of District residents and visitors.”

The department also emphasized their ongoing collaboration with various law enforcement partners in preparation for the 60th Presidential Inauguration, stating they are “working closely with our local, state, and federal partners as we prepare for the 60th Presidential Inauguration.”
