Crime rose in many of America’s largest cities during 2022, according to police, with experts deeming leftist prosecutors as at least partially responsible.
Data from law enforcement has revealed that numerous crimes rose as murders or homicides dropped in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles from 2021, with robberies surging in New Orleans and San Francisco.

While New York City’s year-to-date murder complaints decreased through Dec. 25, more complaints were seen over rapes, robberies, felony assault and burglary, and grand larceny, according to police data. Manhattan Institute Fellow Hannah Meyers argued that the lessening of “policing, prosecution and incarceration” has helped spur overall increasing crime in cities such as New York.
Some experts, including Heritage Foundation Senior Legal Fellow Cully Stimson, have alleged that law enforcement officials connected with George Soros have helped allow these increases in crime.
A high-profile case of a Soros-backed prosecutor that recently drew scrutiny was that of leftist Florida State Attorney Andrew Warren, who was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) over his refusal to enforce the law in Hillsborough County.
“Drops in arrests have been spurred by, among other things, policies that dissuade officers from engaging suspects, such as NYC’s diaphragm law,” Meyers reportedly told the Daily Caller. “This increases the potential risk to cops of either physical injury or of professional, legal, and reputational consequences from grappling with suspects.”
Warren is not the only law enforcement official who harbors sympathy for certain types of committed crimes. A January 2022 memo put out by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced that his office would not pursue felony charges on armed robberies without a seriously-injured victim or a subjectively determined “genuine risk of physical harm,” per the Daily Caller.
Simson noted that homicides in Chicago dropped following the 1990s crime spike but have gone up after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx assumed office in 2016.
“In 2015 there were 493 homicides, but in 2016 when she enacted her hands-off, pro-criminal approach, homicides spiked to 778 her first year, and through 2021 have averaged 680 per year,” Stimson told the Daily Caller.
As the outlet reported, numerous law enforcement officials presiding over U.S. major metropolitan areas had their election campaigns funded by Soros, including Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx, and Los Angeles County District Attorney Gascon. Additionally, the left-wing billionaire gave $1 million to a PAC that donated the same amount to support the 2021 election of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
The Daily Caller reportedly contacted the offices of the Chicago Police Department, Philadelphia Police Commissioner’s Office, SFPD, LAPD, the New Orleans Police Department, as well as Foxx, Krasner, and Gascon for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
