Joseph Knowles, a Michigan auto industry worker and former Democrat, attended President Trump’s State of the Union address as a presidential guest, where he witnessed firsthand the controversial behavior of Democratic lawmakers that reinforced his decision to switch political parties.
The evening was marked by Democratic representatives engaging in various forms of protest, including wearing coordinated pink attire and displaying protest signs. Their conduct became particularly contentious when they remained seated during tributes to a pediatric cancer survivor and a mother who lost her child to violence committed by illegal immigrants.
The tensions escalated when Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, disrupted the proceedings with verbal outbursts directed at the President. The situation became so disruptive that Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to instruct the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove Green from the chamber.

Reflecting on the evening during an interview with America Reports on Fox News, Knowles expressed his disappointment with his former party’s conduct. “I’m very disappointed in the Democrats on how they handled things,” he stated. “And you know what? I feel like I made a damn good choice of not voting for them anymore, and I’m very proud of how Donald Trump handled it.”
Knowles elaborated on his political transformation, explaining that the Democratic Party’s actions contradicted their claimed support for working Americans. “[Democrats] said their agenda was for the working people, but that’s not the case. They’re out-of-touch, and I can no longer support an organization or a political party like that.”
He particularly criticized the Democrats’ refusal to acknowledge certain American citizens during the address, stating, “You know what? That just shows you how out-of-touch they are. Because this doesn’t matter if you are Republican or Democrat, or Black and White — doesn’t matter. These are human lives. Each one of them had lost someone… You know, these are the people that you said that you protect and sworn in for, but you couldn’t stand up for them. You put up signs and you highlight your interests, but these people had lost someone.”

When questioned about potentially returning to the Democratic Party, Knowles expressed confidence in his decision to remain Republican. “I got very good hope for the Republican Party. I mean, more and more people are seeing the true colors of the Democrats. And it took me, I’m sorry, 20 years to see that, and I woke up. I’m very confident the American people will wake up too.”
He concluded by affirming his permanent departure from the Democratic Party, noting that their behavior during the address was consistent with their typical approach. “I’m gone forever. I’ve seen enough, and this — what I saw — this isn’t brand new. This has been going on for a long time. What the TV has shown and what the world has seen, is this is how they always have handled situations like this. They put their agenda first, and that’s all they care about.”
