A former Democratic councilwoman from Orange County is facing serious legal trouble over election fraud allegations.

Alyce Van, who previously served on the Stanton City Council, has been charged with multiple felonies connected to her unsuccessful re-election campaign.

According to prosecutors, Van won her position representing District #2 in November 2020. However, within a year of taking office, she reportedly purchased a home in District #4 with her family members. Instead of stepping down as legally required when moving out of her district, Van continued serving on the council. She allegedly allowed relatives to occupy her former District #2 residence, which was situated next to her parents’ home.

Prosecutors claim that while serving as a council member, Van would drive from her District #4 home to her previous residence in District #2 before walking to attend council meetings at Stanton City Hall.

Despite no longer residing in District #2, Van signed an Affidavit of Nominee under penalty of perjury on July 23, 2024, to seek re-election in that district. She also maintained her voter registration at her former address and cast a ballot in the November 2024 election from that location.

“The integrity of our elections will be safeguarded, and political candidates who lie and cheat the system in order to get elected will be prosecuted,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.

“These are not mistakes,” he continued. “These are deliberate decisions to interfere with our democratic process and they will not be tolerated.”

The charges against Van include felony perjury, submitting false documents for filing, filing fraudulent nomination papers, and illegal voting. She ultimately lost her re-election bid to Parks Commissioner Victor Barrios.

Van’s background includes being born to Vietnamese parents in a Hong Kong refugee camp. She grew up in Stanton and was appointed to the council in 2019, reportedly showing strong dedication to public service.

Her arraignment is scheduled for January 29, 2025. If found guilty of all charges, Van could spend up to six years in state prison.
