Democrat’s Carjacking Incident Sparks Change Of Heart On Policing

In what has been described as a full circle moment, the 2nd Vice Chairwoman for the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Shivanthi Sathanandan, found herself on the receiving end of a violent carjacking incident this past Tuesday. Her traumatic experience has prompted her to reevaluate her stance on policing and youth crime, leading to a plea for accountability.

Sathanandan took to Facebook on Wednesday to recount the terrifying ordeal she and her children endured when “four very young men, all carrying guns” violently carjacked her in broad daylight right in front of their home.

The post included a photo of her head injuries and detailed the extent of her injuries, including bruises, cuts, a broken leg and deep lacerations.

While police later recovered her vehicle, having found it abandoned by the suspects, her emotional post emphasized her “rage” at the lack of accountability faced by criminals.

“These men knew what they were doing. I have NO DOUBT they have done this before. Yet they are still on OUR STREETS. Killing mothers. Giving babies psychological trauma that a lifetime of therapy cannot erase. With no hesitation and no remorse,” Sathanandan wrote.

Calling for accountability, she began, “I’m now part of the statistics. I wasn’t silent when I fought these men to save my life and my babies, and I won’t be silent now. We need to get illegal guns off of our streets, catch these young people who are running wild creating chaos across our city and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PROSECUTE THEM. PERIOD.”

“Look at my face,” her plea for action continued, “REMEMBER ME when you are thinking about supporting letting juveniles and young people out of custody to roam our streets instead of HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS,” she said.

Sathanandan concluded her heartfelt message by expressing gratitude for the Minneapolis 4th Precinct Officers, Mayor Frey, Chief O’Hara, Paramedics, neighbors, friends, and the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) family who came to their aid during this terrifying experience. “I’m so grateful for this community that wraps us in love,” she concluded.

This incident has raised eyebrows, given Sathanandan’s previous support for efforts to “dismantle” the Minneapolis Police Department during the height of the George Floyd riots in June 2020. At that time, she had shared passionate posts on Facebook, calling for a complete overhaul of the police force.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” she wrote. “Say it with me. DISMANTLE. The. Minneapolis. Police. Department. As allies, what can we do right now? LISTEN and LEARN from our Black siblings. And then AMPLIFY this message right now, in this moment…. It’s time to build a new infrastructure that works for ALL communities.”

In another post at the time, she had applauded efforts to remove the Minneapolis Police Department from public schools, aligning herself with the movement to create safer educational environments for children.

Social media users have not held back in responding to the irony of the situation, as some expressed a sense of karma coming full circle.

“Sad and infuriating that so many others have faced similar situations with criminals while she turned a blind eye to it! Now she has a black eye and w broken leg, and she wants justice. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤡 Karma never forgets a face!” a user tweeted.

“At least she gets to know she pushed for it and reaped the reward. My thoughts are with the many normal people who knew the idea to be stupid but who have also suffered. Not supporting your own police force is up there with the stupidest of woke ideas,” another user wrote, with a third person tweeting, “She got what she wished for on everyone else, so now the attitude changes.”
