Democrat Congressman Apologizes For Remarks About Trump

After facing widespread condemnation for his comments against former President Donald Trump in a Sunday appearance on MSNBC’s “Inside With Jen Psaki,” Rep. Dan Goldman (R-NY) has taken to social media to apologize.

In a tweet on X, he wrote, “Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again. While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words.”

While speaking with Psaki, the New York congressman had suggested that Trump “must be eliminated” while expressing his concerns about Trump’s potential return to public office.

“His rhetoric is really getting dangerous, more and more dangerous. And we saw what happened on January 6. When he uses inflammatory rhetoric now, and his recent Truth Social posts, it is incredibly, incredibly scary for anyone trying to work in government,” Goldman stated.

He went on to assert that it was “unquestionable” that Trump should not hold public office again, describing him as “unfit” and “destructive to our democracy.” It was at this point that he used the controversial phrase, saying, “He has to be eliminated.”

Goldman’s comments were seen as “dangerous rhetoric,” too, sparking backlash on social media. Despite his Monday apology, some conservatives on social media continued to criticize Goldman. “So it’s okay for you. It’s just a MISSPEAK. If President Trump would have said that you would have had him raided and locked up. Apology not accepted,” a user wrote.

“You knew exactly what you were doing and what you were saying … you are only walking this back because you don’t like being held accountable for your own words. We see you,” another user tweeted.

Reacting to the video of Goldsman spewing the dangerous statement, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton called for an investigation into the congressman, writing, “Leftist Congressman @RepDanGoldman says Trump ‘has to be eliminated.’ In the least, Goldman should be investigated by the Secret Service for this threat.”

Conservative activist Benny Johnson also shared the video, stating, “Democrat Congressman Dan Goldman just said President Trump ‘has to be eliminated’ while simultaneously ranting about his ‘dangerous rhetoric.’”

Charlie Kirk, CEO of the conservative youth organization Turning Point, raised questions about the potential consequences of such a statement if the roles were reversed, saying, “If a Republican went on TV and said that a Democrat presidential candidate needed to be ‘eliminated,’ they’d be raided by the FBI within hours. Donald Trump is facing half a millennia in prison for saying people should ‘fight.’ Instead, Dan Goldman alludes to the assassination of Donald Trump and does so with zero consequences and zero fear of any consequences.”

Conservative commentator Rogan O’Handley also weighed in on the situation, calling for action against Goldman, stating, “Time to Censure Dan Goldman for inciting violence against a President of the United States.”
