Cuomo: Democrats unfairly targeted Trump with political attacks

NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo delivered sharp criticism of Democratic efforts to pursue Donald Trump through impeachment proceedings and New York legal battles during Tuesday’s episode of “The Chris Cuomo Project.”

In conversation with MSNBC’s Charlie Sykes, Cuomo specifically addressed the two Democratic-led impeachments during Trump’s presidency and subsequent legal challenges in New York. The former CNN anchor characterized the initial impeachment as politically motivated and dismissed the New York cases as baseless attempts to derail Trump’s 2024 presidential aspirations.

“I believe that what the Democrats did to Donald Trump — which I covered which was the job — to impeach a guy when you know you have no chance of getting him removed — okay, zero chance — that was a political indulgence to do nothing but distract from the interests of the people,” Cuomo said. “And you were creating an impression of a standard that you never had any intention of holding up yourself.”

While Trump emerged unscathed from both impeachment trials in 2020 and 2021, he later faced significant legal consequences in New York. Democratic Attorney General Letitia James’s civil fraud case resulted in a $400 million penalty, and Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg secured a criminal conviction in May.

“And the Democrats have proven the problem with their actions. Those New York cases, Charlie, were crap, and they only brought them to try to slow down Trump. We both know it,” he continued. “And what they did with [Vice President] Kamala Harris is proof that they don’t give a shit about any higher standard. They didn’t even allow for Democratic process in their own stupid little club where they can do whatever they want.”

The criticism extended to the Democratic Party’s handling of Vice President Harris’s nomination process. Despite minimal primary voter input, Harris secured the presumptive nominee position through delegate support in July, drawing disapproval from progressive voters and former Clinton advisor Doug Schoen.
