In a Facebook post, famed attorney and Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz announced that he is leaving the Democratic Party due to what he termed as “anti-Jewish” factions within its ranks following last week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC).
In an interview on “Talkline with Zev Brenner,” Dershowitz decried the convention — which he said enabled ostensibly pro-peace speakers to bash Israel while anti-Israel protesters demonstrated outside the event.
Dershowitz told the Journal, “It was Israel-bashing of a sort I have never experienced in all my years teaching or writing about Middle Eastern politics. That made me sick seeing the Democratic National Convention. Absolutely disgusted.”
The finish he gave is that he has re-enrolled as an Independent and does not know who in the 2012 elections he will support. “I am no longer a Democrat. I am an Independent,” he said, continuing that “I want to see their positions on Iran. I implore the current administration to stand up for Israel.”
Dershowitz also said that he had been thinking of leaving the party for a while. A lot of things pushed me in that direction, he said at one point claiming that Vice President Harris had refused to preside over a joint session of Congress when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke. Some Democrats boycotted Netanyahu’s speech, a rare event.
Among the Democratic members of Congress Dershowitz named were: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders “We know all about those anti-Israel legislators,” as well as the Rev Accused antisemite Al Sharpton He then cited anti-Israel protesters lined up outside the convention demanding Israel’s destruction as proof of where his party is headed. That is not my party,” he said.
Since Hamas attacked Israeli on October 7, the Democratic Party has been deeply divided. Sheehan reports that some party members will not condemn the terror group and others blame the popular Prime Minister for the response. Democratic leaders have been calling for a truce ever since, exhorting Israel to be careful in its restraint and not applying the same standards to Iranian-backed Hezbollah.
The DNC was the last straw, he totted. “Everything else starts here, but it was the convention that we had a month ago up in Chicago I think is ultimately what did me over,” he said.
