President Joe Biden turned around claims of mental unfitness on former President Donald Trump and repeated his claims that the GOP presumptive nominee is a threat to democracy. During the annual Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner on Saturday night, the commander-in-chief took a swipe at his political rival’s age and mental acuity, saying, “One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president. The other guy’s me.”

“Don’t tell him, he thinks he’s running against Barack Obama, that’s what he said,” he added.
Biden went further to say, “Freedom is under assault. The freedom to vote, the freedom to choose, and so much more. The lies about the 2020 election, the plot to overturn it, to embrace the Jan. 6 insurrection pose the greatest threat to our democracy since the American Civil War. In 2020, they failed, but … the threat remains.”
Earlier that day, Trump also called Biden “a great threat to our democracy” during a campaign event in Ohio.
“Remember this, Joe Biden is a great threat to our democracy. He’s a tremendous threat to our democracy. His incompetence is the number one reason. Also, he uses the Justice Department, the FBI, to go after his political opponent, which happens to be me,” Trump stated.
The idea that Trump is a threat to democracy is a focal point in Biden’s 2024 campaign. He kicked off his first campaign event for the year by making a case to voters that Trump should not be reelected to the White House due to the threat he supposedly poses to the country.
During his speech on Jan. 5, he said, “I’ll say what Donald Trump won’t: Political violence is never, ever acceptable in the United States. It has no place in democracy. None.”
“Donald Trump’s campaign is obsessed with the past, not the future. He’s willing to sacrifice our democracy, put himself in power,” he added.
