Last week, 17 Democratic members of Congress, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), were arrested outside the Supreme Court during a planned abortion rights publicity stunt.
The stunt was largely memorable because of Ocasio-Cortez and Omar’s embarrassing attempts to make it seem like they had been handcuffed by voluntarily putting their hands behind their backs. But it seems now there was more to the moment than just invisible handcuffs.
As the Washington Examiner reported, the entire publicity stunt was coordinated by the Center for Popular Democracy Action Fund, a group which — along with its sister organization, Center for Popular Democracy — receives over $1 million a year from billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.
As its star participants themselves admitted, the stunt was also pre-planned to the last detail, including the dramatic arrests. In an Instagram post, Ocasio-Cortez said organizers for the Center for Popular Democracy Action Fund asked lawmakers to “submit themselves for arrest in front of the Supreme Court.”
While fully admitting everything about the moment was pre-planned for maximum exposure, Ocasio-Cortez insisted that the demonstration was somehow “very different than a ‘publicity stunt.’”
Incidentally, a spokesman for Omar tipped off careful observers to the stunt’s fabricated, Soros-funded nature even before the event actually took place. In a tweet sent out 30 minutes before lawmakers arrived at the Supreme Court, Jeremy Slevin told people to “follow along.”
“Members of Congress, including [Omar] will be participating in a civil disobedience at the Supreme Court, potentially including arrests, shortly,” Slevin tweeted. “@CPDAction is live streaming it. Follow along!”
After the event, CPD Action released a statement detailing how some of its organizers had also taken part in the fun.
“Moments ago, leaders from CPD Action network organizations, members of Congress & more participated in a powerful civil disobedience demonstration & got arrested to protect our RIGHT to SAFE & LEGAL abortions,” the Soros-funded group posted on Facebook Tuesday.
“This is a clear message to SCOTUS and lawmakers that #WeWontBackDown until ALL pregnancy-abled people are treated as full human beings with the autonomy to make decisions about OUR OWN bodies,” the group added.
