Abortion Supporter Accused of Burning Officer With ‘Makeshift Flamethrower’

An abortion rights demonstrator is accused of attacking a Los Angeles police officer with a “makeshift flamethrower” during downtown protests Friday night. Hundreds took to the streets to protest the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

LAPD said 30-year-old Michael Ortiz sent the officer to the hospital with burns suffered in the assault. He is charged with attempted murder and is being held on bail set at $1 million.

A woman identified as 23-year-old Juliana Bernado was arrested after she allegedly attempted to take an officer’s baton. She was then struck by a 40mm “less lethal round” which reportedly made her arrest substantially easier.

Four officers were injured in the riots from what LAPD described in a statement as projectiles and fireworks launched at them. And, of course, the “makeshift flamethrower.”

Not surprisingly, some on social media lamented the police response to being attacked as “heavy-handed.”

Police were forced to declare an unlawful assembly and issue a temporary tactical alert across the city to get protestors off the streets.

That whole “mostly peaceful demonstration” narrative has been resuscitated by the left’s media allies. And it’s just as relevant now as two summers ago when journalists tried to convince Americans that shooting and looting and burning down police stations was “mostly peaceful.”

LA Police Chief Michel Moore emphasized that he supports First Amendments rights exercised by protestors. However, he condemned “violence against officers that occured last night and into today.” He added the department will “vigorously” prosecute those arrested.

The Police Protective League posted a detailed statement Saturday strongly condemning the unrest. The group noted the “deafening silence among so-called community leaders” and charged the violence against officers had nothing to do with “a woman’s right to choose.”

Protests continued over the weekend with a group describing itself as the “Feminist Front.” It declared on Twitter that it is 15-35 year-olds dedicated to bringing down “White supremacist patriarchy.”

It’s time to mothball the “mostly peaceful” description. If 20 people protest in front of a home and 19 did not throw the Molotov cocktail onto the front porch, is that “peaceful?” Domestic terrorism is wrong no matter the perpetrators, and leftists must recognize this soon.
